PROPANE BURNER PLAN

For Sorghum Furnace

CAUTION This device is not UL approved and great care must be used in its construction to prevent serious injury or death. Contact a licensed professional if you do not possess the skills required to construct this burner. The air flow with this burner is so great that I can not get a pilot light to remain lit. Be sure that there is no build up of propane gas in the furnace when the ignition source is applied. If the burner stops burning close the control valve immediately.

This describes a propane burner I constructed to fire a sorghum furnace. All dimensions are not included as the burner has to be custom built to fit the furnace. The furnace is built similar to the plans provided in the Processing Sweet Sorghum for Syrup by Morris J. Bitzer and Joe D. Fox. Care should be exercised to build the furnace to withstand the sudden rise to high temperatures produced by the burner, i.e. line the furnace with fire brick. Even with this precaution my furnace and chimney cracked during the first trial.

The pan is twelve foot long by four foot wide and is equipped with skimming trays. With trial and adjustment the burner produced a rolling boil starting at the fourth bar and boiled the green skimmings back to the juice end of the pan thereby minimizing the use of the skimmers.
